Chinese New Year- Unicorn (Qilin)

Qilin or Chi-lin? Whatever takes your fancy.

Qilin, is a mythical hooved Chinese chimerical creature known throughout various East Asian cultures, and is said to appear in conjunction with the arrival of a sage. In Japan, it is known as the Kirin beer. It takes a Japanese to come up with a horny name for a beer.

Chi-lin is one of the 3 mythical creatures that manifests itself on the streets of East Asia doing mythical creature dances during Chinese (Lunar) New Year. The other two being the lion and dragon.

Qilin is also well noted for its head-banging dance moves. See it and you shall know what I mean.

Note: not quite sure if you will get to see lion, dragon or unicorn dance over the Chinese New Year period in KK. The ‘Lion, Dragon and Unicorn Dance Convention’ is now over. Held on 22 January, 2011 at Merdeka Field, Kota Kinabalu. The convention is usually held two Saturdays before the Chinese New Year day. Better luck next year.
